Message Rules in Microsoft© Outlook Express©
|
Microsoft Outlook Express provides Message rules that will help you filter your email. These filters can help catch spam or other unwanted emails and deliver them to your "deleted items" folder, saving you time and reducing the amount of email in your inbox.
In Outlook Express, Click on the Tools menu, select Message rules, then Mail. This will open the Message Rules window.

|
In the Message Rules box, click on the New button. This will start the Message Rules Wizard. The main white box in this window will be where all the message rules show up after they have been created. |
| The message rule wizard provides a wide variety of options. You can filter mail based on the sender, the subject, the recipient, words found in the message body of the email, if it has an attachment, or more!
For this example, we will setup a message rule based on the sender of the email. In step 1., put a check in the box next to "Where the From line contains people". Notice the change in box 3. below that. In step 2., put a check in the box next to "Delete it". Notice in Step 3., there are words in blue that say "contains people". Clicking on those words with your mouse will bring up the next box, "Select People".

In the first box, you can type a specific email address. In the picture to the left, we have typed in big@boss.com and clicked the "add" button. This address is known to be used by the W32.SoBig.A@MM virus. Next we are adding the support@Microsoft.com address because this is used by the W32.SoBig.B@MM virus. Make sure you click Add after typing each address to make sure they wil be filtered.
Click OK when you have added all the desired addresses. Note: any email that comes from any address in this box will automatically be sent to the "Deleted Items" folder, so be careful!
|
| In box 4., name the rule with a meaningful name. An example would be "Spam or Virus Address" or "Bad Email Addresses". Click on OK, and then OK again and your rule is done! If you want to add addresses to this rule later, click on the Tools, Message Rules, and then click on the rule you want to edit, and then the Modify button. If you want to add email addresses to the list, you'll click on th elbue text with the email addresses listed and the "Select People" box will show up again.
These steps can be used to create any message rule in Outlook Express. You can vary the criteria for filtering to help reduce the amount of spam or virus emails.
One suggestion: if you do not receive attachments in your email on a regular basis, selecting the "where the message contains an attachment" can be a good way to filter virus infected emails.
